Director | Viticulturist
Ben is a qualified viticulturist with a Post Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University, Canterbury. He has some 15 years experience growing grapes on the Glasnevin soils in the Waipara Valley wine region.
"Through the years I have built up an intimate knowledge and respect for the Glasnevin soils and I continue to be impressed by the exceptional quality of the wines produced from these soils. My commitment to the Glasnevin brand is based on the belief that the soil comes first, but I also believe that making great wine also takes time. Our wines are beautifully aromatic, concentrated, elegant and textural, and I hope you will enjoy them as much as we enjoy making them for you."
Barry has long held a strong affection for fine wines dating back to the heady days of the wine club scene in Christchurch, particularly those hosted by the redoubtable Kingsley Wood. It was from such experiences that Barry eventually became involved in a small hobby vineyard on the lower slopes of Kennedy’s Bush Road ( Mountain View Vineyard ) with other like minded people including Norman Hardie and the late Sir Don Beaven. This vineyard no longer exists.
"The impetus for my initial foray in to being a winegrower and producer, in the Waipara Valley region, came as the result of a solo cycling tour of the main wine regions of France in 1989. I was seduced by the rural landscape, the meticulously maintained vineyards and the passion of the vignerons whom I met along the way. In 1994 I was able to give affect to my dream and establish a vineyard on the south bank of the Waipara River. My responsibilities include business and management oversight of the Glasnevin brand."
